AVIAJA Dance
AVIAJA Dance is a dance company founded and led by Sarah Aviaja Hammeken. We aim to captivate audiences through visually stunning stage art with strong morals and clear messages, questioning society in both local and global contexts. The company emphasizes intersectoral collaborations, believing in the synergy of different art forms to offer audiences the truly magical sensations that occur between artists and spectators.
Sarah Aviaja Hammeken was born in Copenhagen, and has a mix of Danish and Greenlandic roots. Her artistic journey is driven by a profound interest in how the emotional body and dance intersect with society, often drawing inspiration from her Greenlandic heritage.
SILA (2023) is a dance performance inspired by the Greenlandic myth of Sassuma Arnaa (Mother of the Sea). It premiered at The National Theatre of Greenland and was selected as part of the artistic program at Ice Hot Nordic Dance Platform 2024, presented at The Norwegian Opera and Ballet.
Whiteout (2025) is a dance performance that uses strong physical and visual expressions to highlight the taboo societal issue of suicide. The performance will be staged in the spring of 2025 in Copenhagen (DK), Nuuk (GL), and Torshavn (FO).
