SPARROW DANCE/ Esther Wrobel
Sparrow Dance is an aerial dance and cross-disciplinary stage art association formed by Esther Wrobel. The motivation behind Sparrow Dance is to promote and explore vertical dance and other suspended dance techniques to further expand the versatility of performing arts. It aims to expand the possibilities of dance and develop the use of architecture as an active player in influencing movement. Sparrow Dance aspires to challenge and play with the spatial perceptions of both the audience and the performers and explore alternate ways of looking at the world. As the dance often happens above ground on a building facade outdoors, it has a wow factor that attracts a broad audience of all ages.
Since its establishment in 2015, Sparrow Dance has produced performances for adults and children, initiated Vertical Dance Days events, and hosted workshop meetings in Copenhagen, establishing an international network. Currently, Esther Wrobel, with Sparrow Dance, is immersed in projects aimed at promoting cross-cultural gathering, empathy, and curiosity toward the unknown. Recognizing the transformative potential of audience participation, Sparrow Dance has incorporated various interactive elements into the work, including headphones-guided audience, VR experiences, play areas, and experiential stations. Through this approach, Sparrow Dance challenges the conventional dynamics of audience passivity and performer activity, aiming to foster a new level of engagement where audiences are encouraged to move, make choices, and actively participate.
